How to Make Extra Cash while Looking for a Job

While some people are lucky enough to have their next job lined up well in advance, there are so many reasons you might be caught with a little spare time between gigs. While you’re looking for the next perfect role, there are plenty of ways to make a little extra cash in the meantime. Here are a few ideas to get you started:

Take up survey and website testing opportunities.

There are wealth of sites that will let you make some extra cash with surveys or user testing of websites. The latter can be particularly good, as sites like What Users Do or UserTesting can earn you great money for just a simple 20 minute exercise. All you need to do is try out a particular website function and comment back on how you found it – fast and easy to schedule in around other things on your to do list! If you’d prefer to answer surveys, sites like MintVine or Swagbucks are a great place to start. Take the surveys as they become available, earn points, and redeem these for money or gift cards. It’s a great way to make extra money from the comfort of your living room!

Get flipping! Sell items online.

You can sell almost anything online. But once you exhaust the bits and pieces around the house that you don’t use any more, there is an easy buck to be made scouting out appealing items from car boot sales and the like. Use sites like Gumtree or eBay for these kinds of sales, and make a tidy profit on low priced goods. Check out Student Money Saver’s guide on how to be amazing at selling on Ebay, in order to get ahead. Or, if you’d prefer to make things yourself, Etsy was made for the craft enthusiast at home. It’s easy to get started, and if you do your homework and check out the market and competitors, you might be able to find yourself a profitable little niche on here.

Use your car trips to earn extra cash with Uber or Deliveroo

Uber takes a little bit of time to become fully registered with, but if you’re a good driver with a full licence and no issues on your record, you can make extra money from just driving around. Not a bad way to make some extra on your way to an interview! Deliveroo is similarly always looking for drivers who are willing to pick up and deliver take away – you can work as much as you need, make extra cash and enjoy the flexibility.

Sell your photography

If you fancy yourself with a camera (or even if you are just taking simple photos of nothing in particular!), sites like iStockphoto are always looking for contributions. Every time someone purchases one of your photo, you receive a small royalty fee. It’s a great way to keep a little extra trickling in from something quite simple and low effort. Do your best to take clear, quality photos and you too can make a bit extra through stock photography sales – they will often let you know what sorts of themes and content they are especially interested in at the moment.

Get handy around the house.

If you’re good with a few tools, or just willing to do odds and ends around the house for others, sites like Fiverr or TaskRabbit can help fill in spare time with extra odd jobs. People always need help around the home in particular, whether it’s cleaning, babysitting or mowing someone’s lawn. They might not be glamorous tasks, but they sure can help tide things over.

Get freelancing

Whatever your skills are, freelancing can be a great way to keep doing something you’re interested in when you don’t have a permanent role. Sites like Upwork and PeoplePerHour make it easy to list your skills, find jobs that people from across the globe need doing, and get to work! They do charge fees for every successfully completed job, but you can still find yourself taking on work which is interesting, and pays you a little extra.

Nobody likes to be caught without an income for too long, but with these tips you can keep your bank account ticking along until you secure your next job. Be patient, and ease the stress of unemployment with a few of these ideas!
