If you have a head full of ideas which you feel that the world needs, there is a good chance that you may be suited to a career as an entrepreneur. However, having the ideas is only the start. You need to be able to bring them out into the light and turn them into reality. This may or may not prove to be successful which is why great entrepreneurs are often most respected for overcoming failure to achieve success. They do so by treating pitfalls as opportunities to learn and grow.
They also do so by knowing that they will not achieve success on their own. World famous entrepreneur and author Dr h. c. Harald Seiz talks about this in his book “Think BIG – How to Conquer the World with a Great Idea”. He relates stories from his life which show the influence that others have had on the person he is today, and his level of success.
Dr. h. c. Harald Seiz and the influences in his life
Dr Seiz did not have an easy childhood, but despite that, in “Think BIG” he says of his mother,
“My mother was a good-hearted woman…Despite all the problems she had, she also gave me support. She was proud when I took my first steps as an entrepreneur. So, I learned early to be independent, to endure things and to look ahead.”
He goes on to talk about other people who have influenced his ethos and the way he works. One of these people was his boss when he was in his early 20’s. To him, the man looked like you would expect someone in a managerial position to look, and he had charisma. Another, influence in his life is friend Uwe whom he admires for his work ethic and for how he cares for his team. The point that Dr Seiz conveys is that every entrepreneur needs this type of influence in their life.
It’s not just about influences either, it’s about choosing a team that can support your burning enthusiasm to implement your ideas. As Dr Seiz says, in “Think BIG”,
“Getting a big pack together is going to be a lot of hard work. But as a lone wolf you won’t get very far. Everyone has their limits. That’s why you need the right team.”
The moral is that no-one who is embarking on a career as an entrepreneur can afford to be an island. The path to success is paved with the support and influence of others.
Putting Dr. Seiz’s message to work for you
You cannot help but be influenced by the people around you. The key is to not shut yourself off from these influences; learn from people as you progress through your life and your career. You also need to build your own team. Choose people who share your energy and vision and have a genuine passion for your dreams, rather than people who are simply along for the ride and the salary.
No-one succeeds as an entrepreneur entirely on their own, human beings are social animals and they work best amongst a group where talents and influences converge to create a more effective whole.
