5 Skills You Must Have to Become a Delivery Driver for Amazon

On-demand driver jobs are becoming ever more popular, and now that Amazon has launched its Amazon Flex courier service, more people are able to work flexible hours delivering packages from one destination to another.

As an Amazon Flex delivery driver, you’ll use your own vehicle. Before you decide that the job is one you would like to pursue, you need to ensure you have what it takes to become a delivery driver for Amazon.

So, here are five skills that you need to have:

1. Excellent Driving Skills and a Responsible Attitude

There are a few different types of Amazon flex delivery driver jobs, including delivering for Prime Now and Amazon Logistics.

Amazon Prime Now delivery involves getting packages to customers with the utmost speed, usually within an hour or two.

Amazon Logistics delivery is the more commonly available Amazon Flex job. As an Amazon Logistics delivery driver, you would deliver packages between eight in the morning and nine at night, usually working on three or six hours shifts.

To become an Amazon Flex driver, you’ll need to have a valid and clean driving license and your own vehicle. You’ll also need to be a responsible driver.

If you aren’t confident driving on different types of roads, in the dark, or in varying weather conditions, you’ll want to think twice before applying.

You need to have excellent driving skills, an excellent level of concentration, and be a responsible driver at all times if you want to deliver for Amazon.

2. Great Communication Skills

In addition to having skills behind the wheel, you’ll need to have great communication skills. That includes both verbal and written communication skills.

Being an Amazon delivery driver isn’t just about driving. You’ll have a lot of paperwork to complete and you’ll be regularly liaising with your team and with customers, so having excellent communication skills is really important.

3. Superb Attention to Detail

You’ll need to have superb attention to detail to ensure paperwork is correctly processed. You’ll also need to have a keen eye for detail to check your vehicle regularly.

A breakdown can be a nightmare for delivery drivers. By always checking your vehicle and performing regular maintenance, you can ensure breakdowns don’t happen.

You also need a good eye for detail to plot routes and remain updated about things like traffic accidents and bad weather conditions.

Although, if you use route planning software that optimizes routes, those latter details can be automatically taken care of.

4. Quality Customer Service Skills

Another key part of the daily duties of an Amazon delivery driver is providing quality customer service.

Amazon has a reputation to keep, and as a delivery driver, you are the face of the company. That means you need to remember to smile, be polite and courteous, and stick to Amazon customer service policies at all times.

Often, you’ll be the only Amazon representative that a customer meets face-to-face, so your customer service skills are super important.

As an Amazon representative, you may also be required to inform customers of new products and services. You must know how to answer any questions customers may have, too.

5. Good Time Management Skills

A crucial part of Amazon delivery is ensuring packages arrive on time, especially if you’re working as an Amazon Prime Now delivery driver. That means you must have good time management skills.

You need to be able to stick to the strict delivery schedule that Amazon establishes.

Yes, there’s flexibility in the hours you choose to work as an Amazon Flex driver. But when you’re working those hours, you need to meet deadlines to ensure items arrive on time and customers remain happy.
