After graduating from Sheffield University with a degree in Human Geography last summer (July 2011), Nicole New, like many others, was still naïve in the belief that she would be walking straight into a job. After over 300 applications and 9 interviews, she remained jobless. Hating being out of work, she took the initiative and created work for herself.

Raw Egg Interns’ Journey

She began by taking on two internships followed by a temporary Christmas job. During time away from her internships over the Christmas period, both placements commented on the noticeable gap her normal contributions to the teams and organisations had left and in response to this, one organisation invited her back into their team as a paid contractor. At the same time, using the skills she had developed over a few years of part-time work and on her placements, she started freelancing in Marketing; allowing her to shine in the forefront of business decision making as she soon discovered the valuable contribution she was making to companies was vastly different from her competitors – demonstrating that graduates offer companies something very different yet equally as valuable.
