Whether you’re looking for a career change, or you’re entering the working world for the very first time, the automotive industry should not be overlooked. As one of the largest economic sectors worldwide in terms of revenue, there are ample opportunities for job seekers.

As with any industry, it can be tough to get started without some guidance. We’ve put together a quick guide on how you can get your start in the automotive industry!

Decide what type of career you want to pursue

While many people have a limited idea of what the automotive industry offers, the reality is that there are a seemingly endless number of career paths.

Here are a few different options to consider:

Mechanic

A mechanic is probably one of the first positions people consider when thinking about the automotive industry. Duties of a mechanic can range from engine repairs and oil changes to fixing and replacing tail lights, tires, and more! Even under the banner of a mechanic, there are a number of different opportunities such as diesel or heavy-duty mechanics.

Salesperson

Sales play a huge role in the automotive industry. How else would the final product make it to the consumer? If you love working with people, have a knack for persuasion and are passionate about vehicles, a sales role may be the perfect fit.

Automotive design

If you’re a creative type who has an eye for design, you may want to look into opportunities as a product designer or automotive engineer. Whether it’s redesigning an iconic vehicle or creating the next new trend, automakers depend on these types of people to awe and inspire.

Marketing

Another great option for creative types is marketing. Marketing is, of course, a huge field that can encompass everything from web design to creating TV ads. There are a variety of opportunities here as well. You can choose to work as part of a team for a large organization such as an auto manufacturer or dealership, or you could work as a contractor or independent consultant for a local garage.

With an industry as large as this, the list of career choices goes on and on. Do some research and find a career path that suits your strengths and interests!

Get the proper training

Depending on what area of the automotive industry you wish to break into, you may require specialized training. If you’re looking to become a mechanic or technician, trade school and/or an apprenticeship may be in your future. For an engineering position, you will most likely require a degree. Other positions may even require little to no training at all!

Aside from industry-specific training, the internet provides a wide variety of opportunities for education and professional development. Many colleges, universities, and technical institutes offer online courses and training. Don’t hesitate to explore what’s available!

Network

One of the hardest things to do when breaking into any new industry is getting your foot in the door. Networking can go a long way. Not only will this help future employers put a face to your name, but it also gives you the opportunity to learn more about the industry from those who already work in it. You’ll be able to ask questions about education, training, and the industry itself. Making connections early on can create career opportunities.

Start applying

You’ve taken all the crucial steps and now it’s time to start applying for positions! Make sure that you have an up-to-date resume and include any relevant experience for the position you want. Don’t get discouraged if you have to apply to multiple positions before getting an interview. Breaking into any new industry is tough, and perseverance goes a long way! Start preparing for interviews around the same time that you begin applying for jobs. Do some research on the type of questions asked in the field you’re applying for, and start thinking about your answers.
