A Guide to Impressing Your New Boss

Managed to bag yourself a new job? Congratulations! But have you thought about how you’re going to make a good impression once you get started?

Here, we look at a few sure-fire ways to impress your new boss.

Under Promise and Over Deliver

When you start a new job, it can be easy to over promise about what you can deliver. Instead, be realistic and don’t promise too much. When you go the extra mile and really pull out all the stops, it’ll be much more appreciated. This approach also helps to manage your boss’s expectations.

Be Punctual

Always aim to arrive on time, or even a little bit early. It shows that you’re enthusiastic and dedicated to the role. If something out of your control happens that will make you late, call your boss in advance to let them know. This will help them to plan for your absence and not leave them wondering where you’ve got to.

Be Positive

Even if you’re having a stressful day, remain positive. Someone that’s moaning about their work will bring the whole team down, and it certainly won’t give the right signals to your boss. Instead of being the person who whines, aim to be the one who motivates. Make it your business to pick up the rest of the team and get them back on the right track when everything seems to be going wrong. If you’re new to a business, it’s this sort of behaviour that will propel you from trainee jobs to high-level jobs.

Own up to Your Mistakes

Everyone makes mistakes from time to time, regardless of how good they might be at their job. If you do something wrong, own up immediately and take action to put it right. You’ll be respected far more for this than if you just tried to brush the situation under the carpet. And most importantly, learn from your mistakes and consider how you can improve your performance in the future.

Ask Questions

When you’re new to a company, you can’t be expected to know everything. Each day will be a new learning experience, and you should have plenty of questions that you want to ask. Make a note of anything you aren’t sure of and ask your boss if you can have a meeting to go through the main points. It’s much better to ask than to under perform because you don’t have all the information that you need.

Most importantly, relax and try to do your best. It might take a bit of time to settle into your new role, but you’ll soon feel right at home.
