Start with a good resume and cover letter

This post is #2 of a 5 part series on 5 things you can do in next 5 days to help get a job. Part 1, Part 2, Part 3, Part 4, Part 5.

Whether you are working on a project in full time employment or looking for a job being unemployed – there is one trait that is more important than the rest. To finish what you started.

If you are looking for a job you can get lost in the information available online through various sites etc. Take this approach, do something, do one thing for each of the next 5 days to help you get a job.

Please manage your expectation, you may not, actually, it’s highly probable you will not find a job at the end of the 5 day period. However if you finish the 5 things in the next 5 days then atleast you will be in a better position than you are now.

1. Create a good Resume & have a Cover Letter template

Creating a resume – It’s amazing that students still don’t have a resume until it’s after graduation. People, there is never a bad time to have a resume. So make yours today. Download this free resume template I have created, it’s a zip file with two resume templates in .doc format. You can download by clicking the download below. p.s. YES, it has been downloaded more than 15,000 times worldwide 🙂

Creating a cover letter – Now, cover letters are slightly different to resumes. You have to alter your cover letter to each job you apply to. For this reason, I have only created a cover letter template for a generic cover letter. It has handy suggestions and tips of how to fill it in… atleast create one cover letter and get it reviewed by someone for professionalism.

Now, once you create your resume and have a generic cover letter template, send it to a friend! Yes, send it to a friend and ask your friend for feedback and comment on it.

This will help you in:

  1. There will be some mistakes that only a second pair of eyes can see
  2. Friends are honest with their feedback
  3. Once you get initial feedback, you can get a careers adviser to look over it, knowing someone has already looked at it for basic mistakes, etc

Everybody makes resume mistakes, some are funny resume mistakes some are more stupid (even I did stupid resume mistakes)

p.s. if you don’t find a friend or are not sure about sending it to a friend, comment below and I will be happy to review your resume.
